I Made A Summer Camp!

I am thrilled to announce today that I am opening registration for my first ever Algebra Summer Camp 2k25! As someone who has taught Algebra for the better part of 20 years, I have designed the summer camp around a unit of lessons that I've always wanted to teach. This course is designed for students heading in to Pre-Algebra or Algebra, but may also be useful for students wanting a review before taking Algebra 2. AND I'm offering it at a price accessible to every family. Read on for more details!
How Will it Work?
When you register, you will be signing up for either the Monday Morning (10am-11:30am) or Monday Afternoon (1pm-2:30pm) LIVE Zoom class. During that class, I'll have some fun, interactive and mathematically deep instruction and class activities to introduce students to the foundational concept of the function. However, instead of trying to cram too much into any one lesson, we will take our time with the concept of a function to understand how equations, tables, graphs, and our own common sense can be used to express and analyze functions. At the end of each lesson, students will always be assigned the same homework- to take their notes from the week and synthesize it into a "diary" for them to refer to in the fall.
During the LIVE Zoom classes, students will have access to the chat and will be asked to interact with the lesson. I am currently experimenting with additional tools to facilitate as much participation as possible to make this fun for kids!
For families who want a more personal connection this summer, I am making available 40 spots that include eight 1:1 Zoom sessions in addition to the LIVE Zoom sessions. In these 1:1 sessions, the student and I will discuss the learnings of the week, share their work on their "diary", and engage in some individual practice with feedback on the concepts of the week.
Multiple Price Points
As I've been designing this summer program, I wanted to make a price point that will work for all families. Originally, I had hoped to charge $200 for the course and $400 for the course + 1:1 sessions. However, I was concerned that there would be interested parents who aren't in a position to fork over that much money. Additionally, I am hoping that I meet some new families this summer and I wanted to make a low barrier to entry for families who may have heard about my tutoring during the school year but have not yet scheduled a session.
My pricing is $50/$100/$200 for the eight LIVE Zoom sessions, and pricing is $250/$300/$400 dollars for the eight LIVE Zoom sessions as well as eight 1:1 half-hour sessions throughout the summer.
Additionally, I am a "one man band" planning this summer camp from start to finish. That means I can run efficiently, and it also means that there is no Fat Cat skimming money off of the top. Take that, Big Math!
What Will Students Learn?
Over these eight weeks, students will be introduced to the concept of a function, independent variables, dependent variables, domain, range, and features of graphs of functions including function transformations. In addition to linear, quadratic, and absolute value functions we will also look at more unique functions that will challenge student critical thinking. At the end of the summer camp, students will be able to:
Define function, domain, range, independent/dependent variables
Describe the shape of linear, quadratic, absolute value functions
Find the domain/range of a relation and tell if the relation is a function
Describe how (and why) transformations to a function alter both the equation and graph of a function
Evaluate functions and work backwards to solve for an input value given an output value
What I'm most excited about is that we will learn almost all of the above with a mathematical diagram, "Function Flow Charts", that most students have never seen. These flow charts will give students a fresh way to see how Algebra works, and will revolutionize the way they "see" functions and equations in Algebra. Unlike other summer programs, this camp is not a rehash of Algebra or a slew of remedial worksheets: you students will be expected to think, participate, and have fun!
Will This Be Awesome?
Yes, yes this will be awesome. I have decades of experience of making math fun and relatable for students, and I expect to have a fun and active time each Monday. For families who choose the option with 1:1 sessions, I am super excited to serve as a positive check-in and new math friend throughout this summer.
